Once my baby was born, I had to be put to sleep due to more complications during my C-section, and she made sure someone had my phone to take pictures of my baby since I didn’t get to see him before he was rushed to the unit.
I had Katelynne as my nurse twice during a 2-week and 4-day hospital admission. I was admitted when I was 30 weeks pregnant for severe pre-eclampsia.
There was a day when they were having a really hard time finding my baby on the monitors during a non-stress test. It took over 4 hours of lying on my back, and we were still unable to get an accurate reading. I called Katelynne into my room because I felt myself having an anxiety attack due to not being able to breathe after lying there for 4 hours. She thanked me for telling her when I’ve reached my limit, and she graciously helped me to get in the shower and told me to take as long as I needed. Even though we were having issues finding the baby, she told me we didn’t have to continue the NST at that time. It allowed me time to work through my anxiety.
I was then rushed for an emergency c-section. I had woken up from a nap during my failed induction to 4-5 doctors standing in my room telling me they were rushing me for the c-section. I wasn’t ready for all that information and people in my room, and I started panicking again. I requested Katelynne as my nurse, and she accepted taking me on that day and asked one of the doctors to leave the room and also asked them to pause what they were doing to give me time to calm down. She held my hand and stayed by my side during the cervical check before my C-section. After I was rushed to the OR, she explained every detail of what was happening while it was happening. She also made sure my husband stayed involved and informed him of everything. She advocated for me multiple times. Once I woke up in recovery, Katelynne stayed by my side and with my family. She was truly the light that we all needed during that very scary time. As soon as I could be taken to the unit, she took me to see my baby and remained at our sides there as well and took pictures of all of us with our baby.
I don’t think Katelynne understood the impact of what her compassion and empathy did for us during this whole time. I was scared and anxious, and even though I was surrounded by my husband and mom, she gave me a sense of security that they couldn’t have simply by being there. She remembered details about myself that I thought were small; she remembered things I told her about my baby before he was born. You could tell that she loved her job and that she was meant to help guide mothers into this new journey.
My baby is still on the unit, and I think I have found strength in remembering things that Katelynne said to me during my antepartum and labor and delivery.
