I can say with certainty that Kat’s astute observations, direct communication, and knowledgeable bedside nursing skills prevented a more serious, increasingly imminent situation.
Kateryna “Kat” was recently the nurse for my family member when admitted to PCU at GSRMC. As an experienced ICU RN myself, I tend to place other nurses to a high professional standard of care. Kat easily exceeded those expectations. Kat used her critical-thinking skills and vast experience in healthcare to immediately recognize the signs and symptoms of a decompensating patient. Kat is not only a highly informed nurse, but a strong patient/family advocate who remained communicative with both the physicians and I regarding the plan of care. Kat showed initiative and assertively directed care for my family member, which accelerated the consulting MD to the bedside and a direct intervention quickly ensued. Although Kat’s shift had officially ended, she stayed later to keep me updated and provided reassurance as I anxiously waited to hear back from the physician. I can say with certainty that Kat’s astute observations, direct communication, and knowledgeable bedside nursing skills prevented a more serious, increasingly imminent situation. In addition to Kat’s excellent nursing care, she treated both my family member and I with respect and dignity during a stressful situation. Kat was also the nurse for this same family member during a prior hospitalization stay. She not only remembered, but had developed a cheerful rapport, which instilled both confidence and trust. Being on the receiving end of health care can be very overwhelming, even for those in the health field, but I was incredibly thankful for the kindness that both Kat and the staff provided during a week-long hospital stay. Furthermore, I would like to commend Kateryna for her extreme selflessness in caring for my loved one and others while there’s a very real concern for her own family and friends in her home country of Ukraine. While Kat was providing exceptional care to my own family member, it wasn’t lost on me that her own loved ones were currently experiencing an unprecedented assault on Ukrainian cities; forcing her family and friends to hide in subway stations and flee their homes to refugee shelters. Kat is an extraordinary nurse and a shining example of PRIDE. She’s not only an extremely respected coworker and remarkable preceptor to the next generation of nurses, but she’s also dedicated to the best possible care of her patients. My family and I appreciate and thank you, Kat!
