Extraordinary care produces extraordinary recovery. I was admitted for a hip fracture and clavicle fracture after being dragged down the street, walking home and then into the ER. I was in shock and being a mountain climber, I had just watched my beautiful life evaporate in an instant. My husband and I thought our plans of climbing mountains were shattered. We were shattered.

It was in this state of shatteredness that we encountered the delightful, funny, expert surgery nurse. She lifted us out of our terror and confusion in two nights of her caring, uplifting presence. We were both deeply touched. The art of bringing humor and a sense that somehow you will be alright into the OR is an absolute key "event" in the process of healing and recovery. She made me laugh! In the midst of a mind boggling situation, it was okay because she was there.
