This experience has deeply impacted me and reinforced my commitment to providing compassionate care to every patient.
It was a routine day in the ER when a woman in her late 40s to early 50s arrived, showing clear signs of pain and discomfort. She was distressed about her inability to urinate since early that morning. As a student nurse assigned to the triage, I promptly took her vital signs and assisted the nurse in charge to provide the immediate care she required. However, it was evident that her physical discomfort was compounded by significant anxiety and worry.
Recognizing her emotional distress, I took it upon myself to ensure she felt assured and comfortable. T and I began talking to her, engaging in conversation about various topics to divert her mind from her current predicament but first, I asked her what happened and tried to ask other things that may lead to whatever might trigger her current state. Afterwards, we continued chatting and it was through this conversation that I learned more about her, and she gradually seemed less worried and anxious. When it was time for her to be treated, I accompanied her to the room, continuing our conversation to maintain her calm. I asked about her family, her hobbies, and her favorite activities, hoping to provide a pleasant
distraction. In that moment, the pain seemed to momentarily fade from her expression.
As we awaited the doctor's arrival to insert the catheter, I noticed her anxiety beginning to resurface. To ease her worries, I tapped her arm and reassured her that the procedure would be quick and that she would soon feel relief. A small smile began to form on her lips, indicating that our conversation was helping to ease her mind. When the doctor arrived and the procedure was completed smoothly, the patient looked at me with profound
gratitude in her eyes. She and her sister thanked me for staying with her and providing comfort during such a stressful time. It was in that moment I realized the profound impact that a simple conversation and genuine human connection could have in alleviating someone’s pain and anxiety.
This experience has deeply impacted me and reinforced my commitment to providing compassionate care to every patient. I am honored to be able to share this story with you and hope it highlights the importance of empathy and kindness in nursing.
