Katie would always be cognizant of where I was with the patient and would be by my side immediately if he started to get angry or aggressive.
I would like to nominate Katie Krueger, our 4A charge RN, for the DAISY Award. She exemplifies what it means to be a leader on our unit. On even the most hectic shifts, she maintains a calm, supportive presence to staff. I never feel alone when she is in charge, and I know she will have my back for whatever challenge I face. For example, I had an aggressive dementia patient who liked to walk the halls. I would walk with him to make sure he did not go into other patients’ rooms. Katie would always be cognizant of where I was with the patient and would be by my side immediately if he started to get angry or aggressive. Even though it was a stressful time, I felt supported and knew she would be with me through the code oranges or help me diffuse the situation. Another example was when I got a post op patient [a patient returning from surgery] whose respirations were low and he was somnolent. She anticipated my needs for this patient, helping me contact the provider, assist with medications, and interventions without me having to delegate. Katie is great at knowing who needs what, and she is willing to help with the smallest task. It could be the busiest shift, but I feel calm and supported when she is my charge RN.
