Katherine Thorp has been a wonderful new nurse at Neuro, and I really enjoy working with her. I wanted to recognize her for spending a great deal of time practicing therapeutic communication with a challenging patient on Neuro recently. Prior to our night shift, we did not know much about the patient's story. She asked the patient how he was feeling, and he opened up for the first time; at length, she learned pertinent details to understand this patient's struggle and why help was needed to bridge the gap in discharge planning to another program, which was his goal. It was a true display of empathy, understanding, and patience for her to just listen instead of judge. The day before, it had been difficult for both the patient and the staff caring for him as he pondered leaving AMA. Kat always has a calm demeanor and is very kind to her co-workers and patients. I was facilitating this night, and she shared that breakthrough with me. I appreciate her being part of our Neuro team. It is never easy to fill the shoes of a good neuro nurse; those with a talent for it should never be taken for granted.
