When I first started working on Weaver 9 a few months ago, I was a brand new nurse in the brand new residency program. As any new nurse would, I came into my first shift nervous and apprehensive. I was scared that my first day, a day I had worked so hard and long for, would not live up to my expectations. Well my fears came true, and I kept telling myself for the entire 12-hour-shift that I got in way over my head with this unit and I had no idea how I got through the shift. I didn't know how my preceptor, Katherine, did it. From that day forward, until my very last day on orientation, I ended each shift aspiring to be half the nurse she is. At first I simply thought that all it takes is time, as Katherine is 26 and she has all the characteristics of a nurse that I want to be. Then I realized that young or old, age makes no difference. Katherine has been on this floor for two years and I can honestly say I have learned from her experience, her knowledge, her skill, and her bedside manner that she portrays each and every shift. She continues to be what I aspire to be. On the days I was so overwhelmed that all I wanted to do was quit, Katherine guided me in a way that has shaped me as a new nurse. I am forever grateful to have been selected to work on this unit, and have had the pleasure to be taught by a nurse who still serves as my mentor when I have questions. Thank you, Katherine!
