Despite the patient being agitated, Katherine ensured that staff felt safe and that we felt supported.
Katherine Steben is one of the best nurses at the Behavioral Medicine Center. Katherine genuinely cares about her co-workers and her patients. Katherine is one of the relief charge nurses at BMC and she makes sure that she goes around the units multiple times to see if the staff need any assistance. One of the days that Katherine was charge, the staff was having a rough day with being in Unit 300 due to the high acuity of the population. Despite all the work she had to do for being charge, she came out to help us during a situation where a patient was becoming verbally aggressive. When she came out, she processed with the patient to see what can be done to help relieve the agitation and anxiety this patient was feeling. The patient continued to escalate and Katherine took charge of the situation and helped us get ahold of the Doctor to get orders for medication to help calm the patient down. Despite the patient being agitated, Katherine ensured that staff felt safe and that we felt supported. Katherine always comes in with a positive attitude and is great to work alongside. She creates a happy and fun work environment. I am always excited to see that she will be on shift with me. She is a great relief charge nurse, a great preceptor, a great nurse, and overall an amazing human who is the representation of the Loma Linda values.
