Katherine "Katie" Worst exhibits the pinnacle of exemplary nursing.
For several years, Katie worked as a surgical inpatient APN. She recognized a population of patients in need of long-term support and she took the initiative to educate herself on the colorectal patient. As a result, she was identified by her peers as the expert in their care. Katie felt a calling to these children and was willing to dedicate herself to that practice. Katie continued to educate herself, attending national conferences and using Evidence-Based Practices to ensure she was providing the best possible outcomes. She did this with full autonomy, and she did it exceptionally well.
Several years later, the hospital recruited a world-class surgeon to open a fully collaborative center serving children with colorectal and pelvic reconstructive needs. Katie immediately jumped at the opportunity to be a part of this new center. Her commitment to these colorectal children was evident by her sacrificing all else professionally to serve them.
Starting the new center has been incredibly laborious. Her role has been a cornerstone in the center's creation. Her contributions have facilitated the highest quality of care. Katie's been providing clinical expertise for all our patients from 31 states and 15 countries; nearly 400 thus far.
Katie has educated all the center's new clinical team members, as well as the various internal departments these patients utilize for their complex needs. Katie has been instrumental in creating an EMR that will make meaningful information easily analyzed by care providers outside the colorectal program. This work will facilitate data extraction so that outcomes can be tracked, and results published. This has allowed the program to join the international consortium of colorectal programs. Her work is literally changing the face of care for these patients across the world.
