I got to spend a week at Camp Krazy Legs with her and the campers took to her. She made memories for these kids and was more than just a camp leader. She helped quite a few of the girls with some very personal and emotional wounds that they came with.
What makes a truly amazing nurse? Is it spending quality time with patients and families? Is it building bonds that keep them asking for the same nurse again and again? Is it investing your own resources and money to provide special things that customize care? Well, yes, all of these do, and all of these things reflect one nurse on my floor. This nurse is one of the most dedicated and loving nurses I have ever worked with. She picks up (in addition to being already full time) usually 1-2 shifts each week. She loves her job and loves her patients even more. The bonds she builds with them last. We have patients who return on our floor sadly too often and when they do, this nurse is always someone they reach for. She loves to spend the money she makes working her extra shifts to buy onesies for the babies who are here with DFACS or have no family to love and hold them. She brings in special clothing she picks and buys based on their personality and what they will look too cute in. She does this because she knows the bonds and love and care shown at the first stages of life shape that baby. I got to spend a week at Camp Krazy Legs with her and the campers took to her. She made memories for these kids and was more than just a camp leader. She helped quite a few of the girls with some very personal and emotional wounds that they came with. One night, she realized there was a lot of pain and rejection in her teenage girls, and she coordinated child life to come for an evening and worked through so many issues. The healing that took place due to her actions will help build the girls' confidence and allow them to live lives that are more reflective of the CHOA name. I love watching her work, staying late to ensure oncoming nurses not only get a nursing report but a personal report to continue the loving care she starts. She is the true reflection of what CHOA wants its nurses to be. She precepts new grads and shows them the best way to build relationships and reflect those values. I love that she has taken new nurses under her wing because if they have half the amount of passion and love she does for her patients and job, CHOA will grow leaps and bounds.
