Her curiosity and willingness to listen to my experience, plus her focus on improving patient care, gave me the confidence that I was not just another case but a valued person under her care.
My recent pacemaker implant procedure was my most pleasant hospital experience ever. The entire EP Lab team was exceptional, from pre-op to getting in the car. Over the past few years, I've spent considerable time in hospitals for myself and my family members. From this experience, it's easy to recognize notable outliers. Kathleen Carey assisted my primary post-op nurse. Immediately, I noticed Kathleen's calm and caring ways. It's hard for some people to understand, but I'm sensitive to people's energy and could tell there was something special about her. She went above and beyond to ensure I felt comfortable, safe, informed, and well-cared for. She quickly followed up on my questions and concerns that she couldn't answer directly. Her attention to detail, empathy, compassionate demeanor, and unwavering dedication to her profession are extraordinary and greatly appreciated. While in recovery, I passed out in the chair and needed a team of nurses to hoist me back into bed.
As I came around, Kathleen's soothing ways helped bring calmness while I waited for additional information. I recently read "The Heart Speaks" by a cardiologist. Her stories demonstrate the importance of actively listening to patients. She explains that this therapeutic exchange improves the care delivered and patient outcomes. Kathleen is a perfect example of this. She noticed in my records that I had to return to the ED just hours after my last procedure in July and asked me what happened. Her curiosity and willingness to listen to my experience, plus her focus on improving patient care, gave me the confidence that I was not just another case but a valued person under her care. She also brought me to and from x-ray and wheeled me out to my ride instead of putting me in the transport queue. The engagement she demonstrated with each interaction shows that she loves what she does and does it in a caring and professional way. Kathleen is an absolute treasure, and I feel incredibly blessed to have been under her care. Kathleen embodies the nature of being a healer. Her presence, patient-centered care, and professionalism reflect the highest values of MGH and the EP Lab, and it's clear that she is an invaluable asset to both.
