Kathleen is a skilled communicator, she takes the time to listen to the nurses, nurse managers, nurse educators, and her interprofessional colleagues. She is always fully present and engaged.
Kathleen has so many accomplishments over the course of her tenure within the Mount Sinai Health System for more than 25 years, and most recently as the Director of Nursing Education and Professional Practice. Kathleen is and always has been a nurse’s nurse. I have worked with Kathleen for the past 5 years so I feel qualified to enumerate her accomplishment and describe the non-quantifiable elements that make her a true DAISY Nurse Leader.
Over the past few years and throughout the pandemic we have worked closely together and I have come to realize that our institution and healthcare system are significantly better due to her dedication, integrity, and compassion. Kathleen is a skilled communicator, she takes the time to listen to the nurses, nurse managers, nurse educators, and her interprofessional colleagues. She is always fully present and engaged. Her office is known as a safe space for all members of the team, and her support and kindness are authentic. This is a true gift, especially during the past few years when we are experiencing a high rate of caregiver burnout and moral distress.
Kathleen embodies the values of the MSHS of teamwork- she consistently comes from a place of yes. When there were several nursing leadership vacancies, Kathleen was the director of nursing education, director of medical/surgical service, nurse manager, and any other roles that needed to be covered. She did all this with a smile and never complained. Furthermore, she covered all these areas during the pandemic, when change and uncertainty were the only constant.
Kathleen is a true example of the MSHS Value of Agility- in her tenure, Kathleen has severed several vacancies in the nursing department including, but not limited to, Nurse Manager, Director of Med/Surg nursing, Night supervisor, Nurse Educator, and covering for the CNO when needed! She has done all this while maintaining her primary role as director of nursing education. Kathleen doesn’t “sweat the small stuff” and has a Joie de vi·vre, bringing joy and positivity to every situation. Kathleen makes everyone feel welcome and part of the MSM team. The oncology service line recently on-boarded a new clinical educator for oncology / infusion who is new to the educator role. Without me having to ask, Kathleen volunteered to mentor this new employee and began including her in team meetings, and updates, and ensured that she felt welcomed by the community of nurses at Morningside. This belies Kathleen’s personification of our MSHS motto “Better Together”. Kathleen does not think of “me” she constantly thinks of “we” and how we can all learn from one another and build a better team. Kathleen is an excellent role model, again living the MSHS nursing mission statement of “leading the way”. She is constantly seeking ways to improve the quality of care of our patients.
During the height of the pandemic, we had several research studies for covid positive patients to receive monoclonal antibodies (MoAb) as well as clinical trials regarding plasma. Over the past 24 months, we have instituted organizational policies regarding the administration of MoAbs, this implementation plan included a large interdisciplinary team and required agility for cross-campus collaboration. As one of the clinical experts on the project and policy team, I can attest that the Morningside campus had the fewest issues and the implementation was seamless due to Kathleen’s leadership. Her tireless commitment to ensuring that each nurse on all shifts had the information they needed to ensure safe and quality care was admirable. I was amazed at her endless energy and boundless commitment to ensuring the safety of the staff and ultimately the safety of our patients. Kathleen rounded on every unit during night sift, day shift, and weekends, to ensure accurate dissemination of these new procedures and policies. Hundreds of patients and nurses benefited from Kathleen’s commitment.
In summation, Kathleen exemplifies the elements of the DAISY Nurse Leader Award, and I cannot think of a more deserving individual. Kathleen is truly a remarkable colleague and an asset to our hospital and profession, and it’s a privilege working alongside this extraordinary leader.
