She quickly jumped into the role of bedside nurse and set the tone for a calm and efficient team
Kathi is always an awesome nurse! The unit was busy that day and Kathi was working with me, a PRN nurse, a new grad, and a float from another unit. She had a full assignment and was in charge. As you might imagine, she was the go-to person on that shift. Kathi helped with multiple IV starts and lab draws, double-checked insulin, and fielded questions about paperwork, bed assignments, and admissions. Around 4 pm, a patient on the unit without any history of seizures had one. Kathi was one of the first to respond and assumed care at the head of the bed. She quickly and calmly voiced roles that needed to be filled and equipment/medications needed at the bedside. As we worked to eliminate the most common reasons for seizures in kids, Kathi invited the parents to be at the bedside comforting their child, updated them on VS and labs, and answered questions as she was able. Common causes were ruled out and the patient had a second seizure. Kathi seamlessly handed off her previous assignment and headed to CT with the patient. The patient was transferred to the main campus shortly before 7 pm and passed away a couple of days later. As we talked amongst ourselves/debriefed, I heard more than one person say how wonderful the family was throughout the whole situation. I attribute some of that to Kathi. She quickly jumped into the role of bedside nurse and set the tone for a calm and efficient team. She displayed her competence and earned the family’s trust earlier in the day during a difficult IV start. She encouraged them to be at the bedside comforting their daughter, and she answered any questions she could with compassion. That day, Kathi was an amazing leader in our unit and support for parents in this most difficult situation.
