To know Kath is to be cared for and respected
Kathleen is the perfect model of what a VA nurse should aim to be. There are countless stories our team could tell about Kathleen's tireless efforts to care for not only our patients but every individual she encounters. Kathleen is committed to making sure our veterans receive the utmost care. There was an instance in the winter when a veteran had waited a long time to receive a vaccine. Kath treated this veteran to coffee and spent her lunch break eating with this veteran. She did not expect any praise; she did not even mention it. I could tell this made the veteran feel respected, and it was above and beyond of Kath to do. Kath is an advocate for her team and the veterans. She felt changes could be made to our daily huddle to include educational interludes to ensure the team is up-to-date on the latest evidence regarding infectious disease. She advocates for nurses' ability to comprehend high-level education and how important our job is in educating patients and answering questions with valid information. She collaborated with a team member to enhance the huddle and has presented on Monkeypox, vaccine guidance, personal protective equipment, and more. Secondary to Kath's efforts, our nurses feel empowered, heard, and educated. Kath takes the time to get to know her patients and radiates warmth, comfort, and care. She makes her patients feel safe and her co-workers feel supported. She respects veterans' service and listens to their stories. She was SO excited to tell us all about a 90+-year-old, highly-decorated Vietnam veteran with whom she spoke of his accomplishments, looked at pictures of his awards, and talked about his late wife. Kath is willing to help and be a leader in any facet. She is truly an excellent, dedicated nurse. Kath works diligently to get employees returned to work while keeping our facilities safe. She is always well-versed on ethical issues, policies and procedures, infectious disease, and culturally competent care. She is a member of the ethics book club and frequently shares books for our team to read. To know Kath is to be cared for and respected. She radiates joy and has a calming nature about her. She is an excellent team member and a nurse we all aspire to be. It's about time we recognize her for it!
