During his last breaths, Kate provided this patient peace and comfort.
I am nominating Kate Schuppe for her tireless dedication to providing the utmost excellent, compassionate, and ethical care for a shared patient of ours. This patient, unfortunately, spent his last two months alive here at CHOP and he trusted very few providers and clinicians before he passed, one of those people being Kate Schuppe. Kate provided honest and compassionate care up until her last shift with this patient until he passed a day later. Kate's genuine and kind demeanor seemed to provide this patient and his family a sense of relief during the most painful moments of their life. This patient asked Kate very direct questions regarding death and dying, which Kate answered in the most honest and developmentally appropriate way every time this topic was addressed. Kate advocated for the patient's wishes throughout his last weeks and days alive. Kate provided this patient with a sense of dignity and respect as he was a member of the military prior to his cancer diagnosis. Kate stepped in and up for the patient when his family were too heartbroken to accept the reality of his disease. Kate provided honest and ethical information throughout his time here and advocated for the medical team to do the same. Kate provided excellent nursing care, following all procedures and policies throughout a very complicated case. Above all, Kate made such a profound impact on this patient that in one of his last breaths, the patient stated he felt like he was "flying" and smiled. This patient stated this due to his question to Kate, "What does it feel like to die?" Kate stated that due to the patient's love of the air force and planes that she wondered if it feels like flying in the air. During his last breaths, Kate provided this patient peace and comfort. I am lucky to work with a nurse who gives her patients her all in the most professional, ethical, and compassionate way. This 24-year-old patient felt that level of peace and acceptance due to Kate's genuine and honest nursing care. We are lucky to have Kate on our team.
