I was extremely impressed with the professionalism and care that Kathryn Green provided to my sister.
As a nurse for almost 50 years and an educator for over 40 of those years, I was extremely impressed with the professionalism and care that Kathryn Green provided to my sister.

Kathryn took care of my sister after she had been critically ill for several weeks and still required close monitoring of fluid balance, labs, and vital signs, as well as total physical care. The second day that Kathryn cared for my sister was the first day that Kathryn was off orientation and not paired with her preceptor. I know that Kathryn had several other patients who were also very ill and required a lot of care and close monitoring. In spite of this, Kathryn always conveyed a calm, unrushed demeanor and remembered to follow up on patient requests. She explained what she was doing and what medications my sister was getting in ways that my sister, someone with no medical background, could understand. Knowing the hazards of immobility, I was very appreciative that Kathryn ensured that my sister got up to a chair each day, despite the challenges of getting the lift and moving someone who required total support. I compare this to other days when Kathryn was not her nurse and my sister was not gotten out of bed despite my requests. Contributing to an exceptionally busy day, Kathryn had a nursing student with her on Kathryn's first day off of orientation. I was extremely impressed with Kathryn's patience and mentoring of the student, quizzing the student on the six rights of medication administration and gently probing when he could not remember them all.

Having initiated the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nursing Faculty at my institution, I am familiar with the DAISY Award and the special qualities of awardees, Kathryn exemplifies these qualities. I was reassured on the days that Kathryn cared for my sister, confident in the knowledge that she was in good hands. As I near my retirement, Kathryn gives me hope for the future of the nursing profession providing exceptional patient and family-focused care.
