Katie contacted me to help get her patient discharged in a timely fashion in order that the patient would be able to attend her child's doctor's appointment.
While I was charting on the patient to get discharged, I overheard Katie encouraging a fellow nurse to contact that patient's physician for better pain management. The other (new) RN was saying "her pain is not that bad." Katie was advocating for the patient who wasn't even hers stating "the patient has gone through enough, she shouldn't suffer and it is our job to help her."
As a patient, I would want a nurse like Katie every time.
As a physician, we should all be like Katie.
She inspired me today... Don't do what's easy, do what's best for the patients!
