Katie is one of the most exceptional nurses I have ever worked with. She strives to provide safe fun filled patient care at all times. She brings joy and laughter into every patient room she enters, advocates HARD for her patients, and builds intentional relationships with each family she encounters.
Katie recently had a patient whose family felt as though they were falling through the cracks. During her shift, she fought for her patient's mom's concerns to be heard by the provider and made sure the mom knew she was heard by Katie. She acknowledged the mom's concerns frustrations and fears. She actively listens to all of her patients and families, but this mom needed a listener desperately and Katie came to the rescue. The mom started the shift very frustrated overall and gave short responses to most staff entering their room, by mid-day Katie had gained this mom's trust and showed her how passionate she is about providing outstanding nursing care. The mom thanked her for her hard work and her pause to care attitude in order to get the attention her daughter needed and had not been receiving.
It is an honor to work with Katie and I learn from her every day. Katie is also a preceptor on our unit and she holds so much pride in guiding new grad nurses and new hires on how to be the best nurse they can. She teaches them to follow policies and procedures to always ask questions to speak up for what they need for themselves and their patients and is always going above and beyond to give them the orientation experience they deserve. Katie makes each person she precepts feel valued and heard - she encourages them to always be better because as she always says everything we do is for the patients.
