Katy Miller personifies the attributes of the DAISY Award: caring, excellence, integrity and respect for others. Katy is passionate about being a nurse and doing her best to be an advocate for patients. She has shown an insatiable curiosity about all aspects of her patients, going beyond the conventional scope of care to embrace the totality of the individual, transcending mere clinical assessments to address the holistic needs of those she serves. She attempts not only to make her patients feel comfortable and included but also to make her classmates and nursing staff feel included in the units. She has the natural-born skills of building a team and making others feel included. Her peers look to her for advice and support, and she offers it without hesitation. Her peers trust and value her opinion and input. A simple but characteristic story about Katy at clinical: she had a long list of other tasks to get done at the end of a tough clinical day. But when a patient asked staff to go for a walk with someone, without hesitation, Katy dropped what she was doing and made time in her day to volunteer to walk the patient a couple of laps around the unit. It was a simple act but significantly uplifted the patient's spirits enough that the patient pulled her instructor aside to thank them for training such great nurses. However, it comes naturally to Katy to put others first; she was born to be a nurse and born to be a DAISY Nurse.
