Kathy has been a Hennepin County Medical Center Float Pool nurse for 23 years, providing patient care in our adult and pediatric medical, surgical, intermediate, and intensive care units. Her astute assessment abilities, extensive nursing knowledge, and advanced nursing skills provide the highest level of nursing care to her patients. She is also well known as the most knowledgeable resource for all our night shift nurses. She can answer just about any question or start any IV that is needed. She is a role model for many of our nurses.

As a preceptor, she teaches our new nurses to excel as new nurses. She openly shares all of her knowledge and skills they need to be successful. She is a great mentor for our new nurses as they learn to care for a medically unstable patient or just a challenging patient assignment. She is a true patient advocate, making sure patients have the orders they need and are in the right unit to receive the correct level of care. She is recognized frequently by her patients and coworkers across our organization as being a leader for excellent patient care.

A coworker recently recognized her: Kathy is always a great help, providing excellent customer service to patients while assisting coworkers- completed wound care, med administration and going the extra mile to get something for a patient.

She is also the nurse who brings all patient care safety issues to the attention of management so they can be addressed and corrected. For example, she works diligently to make sure that each unit has all the supplies and tools they need to be able to provide patient care in a seamless manner. She also serves as a Rapid Response nurse on our Rapid Response Team. So many of the patients she serves never know of the lifesaving care that they received from such a special and highly skilled nurse. Her concern for quality nursing extends from her bedside care to being a member of our unit Excellence Council and our organizational Professional Practice Council. She should be called out and recognized for her constant dedication to safe and quality patient care.
