My husband was in St. Joe’s rehab and he got double pneumonia in both lungs. Because of his lung cancer he was not able to fight it. He was moved to the 2nd floor with the idea of getting hospice on Saturday. I told Kathy his birthday was on Sunday and I wanted to take him home with hospice that day. She got a hospice name and I called them and they could not take him until Monday. I was so upset and Kathy said “let me see what I can do”. She came back later and said she had found a company that could take him home that day. So, because of Kathy going above and beyond for us, my husband got to spend a wonderful last birthday weekend with all his family and friends. He then passed on Tuesday. I will be forever grateful to Kathy for making that possible for us. Then, as fate would have it, I ended up in St. Joe’s in November and Kathy was my nurse for a couple of days. She was the same caring nurse with me. She always had a smile on her face and asked if there was anything else she could do for me or if I needed anything. Kathy truly represents what the word “nurse” means and I think she is most deserving of this award.
