We had a patient in ICU that had made a coherent decision to be a DNR/DNI. She was sick but very much with it at the beginning of our shift. The patient began to have difficulty breathing and the nurse treating the patient stayed at her bedside. The patient was placed on BiPAP and the nurse held her hand and spoke to her to try and get her to relax. The patient was COVID positive but the nurse called the patient's son to see if he wanted to come to see her. The nurse stayed at the bedside until the family was able to make it. She comforted the son and the patient for her entire shift. The patient ultimately expired but the nurse made the transition easy for everyone. It was so great to see the compassion and love that the nurse was able to provide them. This is something Kathy does on a routine basis but there is something special about her and how comforting she is.

Thank you, Kathy, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
