Kathy tried to make him laugh, tell him stories, ease his pain, and overall try to lessen the stressful situation for him.
Last week I was in the ED with my 3 year old son. Earlier that morning we had been to Urgent Care, where he was swabbed for strep, and a little traumatized by that whole process. His symptoms worsened throughout the day which forced us to the ED. He was very scared and rightfully irritable. The doctor treated him with oral meds, which again, was a previous traumatizing experience for the dramatic 3-year-old. From start to finish Kathy was amazing with him! She tried to make him laugh, tell him stories, ease his pain, and overall try to lessen the stressful situation for him. When she could have walked out of the room and moved on to her next duty, she didn't. She came back with a "magic trick" for him. She allowed him to squirt her (more than once) with a syringe of water. I walked into the hospital with a very scared son, but walked out with a little guy who was laughing and couldn't stop talking about the "doctor" and the "squirt gun." In a time where the ED is being bombarded with patients, COVID chaos, and added duties, she never showed a sign of stress or exhaustion that I have to imagine was hidden underneath her smile and upbeat personality. I can't thank her enough for making our experience a positive one. P.S. A week has gone by and my son is still talking about the "squirt gun" and makes sure he has it in the bath every night.
