We had a code critical patient come to the ED. The patient was a DNR. Once the patient was stable, Kathy brought the patient's sister to the room. She explained what was going on and encouraged the sister to talk to the patient. When the patient's sister was in the room, the patient's girlfriend came into the ED. Kathy got permission for both women to be in the room so they could say goodbye. Kathy reassured both family members that she was keeping him as comfortable as possible and explained what was happening at all times up to the time of his passing. After he passed, he was moved to a different room and make sure the family stayed with him to say their goodbyes. She took great care of both the patient and the family.
