I wanted to take some time and recognize your lactation consultant, Kathy. I was most impressed with her recently when she was working with a very high-risk mentally ill patient whom I had sent back to the emergency room for panic attacks. During that time her baby had been readmitted into the NICU at Good Samaritan. Kathy worked with the patient and her baby and quickly picked up on the fact that this mother was not mentally stable. Kathy took it upon herself to reach out to me on my personal cell phone and let me know. I was able to call the patient, call the GYN doctor, and get the patient readmitted to the floor for Psychiatric evaluation. I was most impressed that Kathy was able to step out of her role as a lactation consultant and put the patient's mental health needs before her lactation needs. This is not the first great encounter I have had with Kathy. I respect that she meets a patient where she is and respects her goals and needs with breastfeeding. She is respectful, sensitive and courteous. I think she's an excellent addition to your staff. You are lucky to have her, and I am happy to recognize her for going above and beyond her role.
