Kathy provided care for a patient who was the victim of road rage with a gunshot wound that caused paraplegia. The patient's wife had been away out of town and did not know the intensity of his injuries. She arrived at our unit and was able to maintain composure in front of the patient but as I walked into a private space later on, Kathy was sitting on the stairs holding the hand of the spouse as she wept. Kathy had tissues, a calm voice, and sympathetic eyes and even though we all wore masks, you could tell the empathy and compassion she shared with this woman. Kathy provided something not taught in school or a classroom, but humankindness from the heart.
