I initiated a rapid response for an acutely agitated patient experiencing what was likely hospital-acquired delirium. The patient was confused and attempting to leave against medical advice in a situation where that was not medically appropriate. Despite repeated de-escalation attempts by the primary nurse, team lead, security, and even the patient’s son and daughter, the situation continued to escalate.

When Katia entered the room, the dynamic completely shifted.

With a remarkably calm and soothing presence, she approached the patient with patience, dignity, and respect. Rather than overpowering the situation, she gently took control. Through her measured tone, thoughtful body language, and genuine empathy, she slowly de-escalated what had been an increasingly volatile encounter. One by one, the rest of us stepped out of the room until it was just Katia and the patient.

Although the patient remained disoriented to place and situation, Katia met him exactly where he was. She found common ground, spoke to him in a way he could understand, and treated him not as a problem to solve, but as a human being in distress. Through her words, presence, and unwavering patience, she was ultimately able to convince him to remain in the hospital for the treatment he urgently needed—a critical outcome achieved without force, confrontation, or trauma.

In my role as a cardiology moonlighter, I work frequently with Katia, as she often serves as team lead and/or rapid response. In high-stakes situations where emotions run high and decisions must be made quickly, her steady leadership consistently sets the tone for the entire team. She creates a therapeutic milieu not only for patients, but for staff as well. Time and again, I have witnessed her lower the temperature of the room, unify the team, and guide care with both clinical excellence and deep compassion.

Katia embodies the very essence of the DAISY Award. She is clinically exceptional, but what truly sets her apart is her unwavering commitment to treating every patient with dignity, advocacy, and humanity. She does not simply manage crises—she transforms them into moments of compassionate care. Her presence makes patients feel safe, families feel heard, and teams feel supported.

Thank you, Katia, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
