I cannot thank Katie enough for what she gave to me. If I had a different nurse that day, I do not know if my sweet boy would be here today.
Katie saved my son’s life when I was in labor. Her ability to be organized and calm when things started to go wrong helped give us the precious moments needed to deliver my son safely through a stat c-section.

I thought I had nominated her back when it happened but discovered the paper in my hospital paperwork box.

My son would absolutely not be alive if Katie was not the incredible nurse she is.

Katie deserves to be recognized for saving my son's life and keeping me calm throughout the process.

When I was in labor, my son’s heartrate kept going down during contractions. I remember asking for the epidural and having the anesthesiologist come in to discuss it with me. We were going to begin and the anesthesiologist asked Katie if I could sit up to receive the epidural, Katie said not yet. Katie remained calm and collected while she dialed in additional nurses and my doctor, who discovered I had a prolapsed cord. After unsuccessfully trying to get the cord back in, we went in for a C-section. I had to be completely out because there was no time for anything else. After I came to, Katie answered me numerous times to tell me my baby was okay and in the NICU. I kept coming in and out of it, and each time, she was patient and told me about it. Her kindness not only during but also after my delivery is why I was able to process my delivery and do not have trauma when looking back at the experience. Katie will always be the reason my son is alive, and I’m forever grateful to her.

Addendum:
The baby mentioned in the story, B, just celebrated his fifth birthday. Each year, on B’s birthday, R and her spouse send Katie a gift. “I cannot thank Katie enough for what she gave to me,” said R. “If I had a different nurse that day, I do not know if my sweet boy would be here today. Katie was just doing her job like she does for every laboring patient she has. It’s her organizational skills that led to us having just enough time to get him out when the prolapsed cord was discovered. This is the first year we have told B about how Katie saved him when he was being born. His response was ‘she is so nice; we should say thank you for saving me alive.’ Katie, thank you so much for being exactly who I needed that day.”
