Katie not only treats her patients with kindness and dignity, but I have witnessed her shed many tears for her patients, alongside their families throughout the years I have worked with her.
I gladly nominate Katie for the DAISY Award. I have had the pleasure of working with Katie for over 13 years and have witnessed her exemplify Nursing excellence year after year.
She possesses great clinical skills and is able to think critically and act quickly in emergent situations, while maintaining calm. Although rare in our unit, I would feel very comfortable with her by my side in any RRT or code situation. Because of her experience and ability to lead, she has been a great resource to our unit, often playing the role of preceptor. I know those around her often look to her for guidance and support.
She is also honestly one of the most compassionate and most caring people I know. Katie not only treats her patients with kindness and dignity, but I have witnessed her shed many tears for her patients, alongside their families throughout the years I have worked with her.
Katie is innovative. She often tries to come up with “different” or clever ways to cheer up our patients; or even just to bring a smile to their faces. Most recently, she implemented the “Hand of God” technique (placing two latex gloves with warm water to support the patient's hand) that she had just read about to comfort an isolated patient.
Katie also serves as a great role model. She has achieved clinical ladder year after year and has offered mentorship to others on our unit. She also has maintained Hospice/Palliative Care Certification.
Last, but not least, despite her busy schedule as a mom to three young kids, Katie gives some of her valuable time to the community. In her spare time, she coaches girls field hockey at a local high school. She not only serves as their coach, but also serves as a mentor and role model to these young girls.
I have been fortunate to work alongside Katie all these years and truly cannot think of anyone more deserving to be recognized.
