I had the pleasure of teaching nursing students in the ACE Unit. I was impressed by all the nurses working on that unit.
There is one nurse, in particular, who exemplifies the caring, expertise, and excellence all nurses should strive for. Her name is Katie Bodder.
There was a patient on ACE who was slightly confused and with short-term memory loss. He would become frustrated and try to leave regularly. I was honored to watch how Katie helped this patient with great kindness and compassion.
She gently reminded him of why he needed to be in the hospital and helped him come up with ideas to make himself more comfortable there. She de-escalated the situation of him leaving the floor, thereby preventing security from intervening.
She used compassion and intelligence to truly help a patient, showing her excellent nursing skills.
