As a travel nurse, I had picked up an assignment in the Grand Rapids area. This was my first assignment after leaving a non-floor nurse position and in another country as well. While working the night shift alongside Katie I had a patient who was palliative and actively dying. I was battling competing priorities and did not have the ability to give this patient extra attention.

Katie noticed this and with her amazing ability to empathize with everyone she sees, she took the time out of her busy night to sit with my patient and hold their hand while the family was rushing to come in. It was an unfortunate situation as the family lived out of town and were struggling to make it to the hospital before their loved one passed. Katie was kind and supportive to this patient in a way I had not seen before. She sat and held there in the patient's last moments so they did not have to be alone during the dying process. I was thankful she was able to assist me in this, more so the family, when they arrived, was extremely thankful Katie was there to support their loved one. The family was able to grieve properly knowing their loved one was not alone through the last moments of her life.
