My mother was suffering from complications from a fall and was in the ICU with a bleeding ulcer. Katie Faherty was her nurse on the day that would ultimately be her last day with us. I will be forever grateful for the care and compassion that Katie showed to my mother and me.
Katie made both my mother and me comfortable. Since she was in the ICU, I had apprehension about my mother's condition. Katie was so kind and caring that I was able to relax and just be with my mom. My mother suffered from dementia and incredible hearing loss. Katie looked directly at my mom when she spoke to her. Her tone and manner were very comforting. She listened intently to both of us. She made sure I was able to sit close to my mom, often making me take her own chair. She always asked us both if we needed anything. As a nurse myself, I know this is what is expected of nurses. But Katie exceeded all of the expectations and did it with such ease that I didn't worry about what was happening around us, I was able to truly focus on my mom. I knew Katie had it all covered. She felt like a trusted friend.
My mom went to Interventional Radiology for a procedure and although I don't think Katie had to travel with her, she did. She was able to be with my mom through the procedure and was able to explain to me how things went when they got back. Although my mom did not survive surgery later in the day, I will always be grateful that Katie made my last day with my mother a good one despite the conditions and that my mom left the world after having such compassionate care.
Thank you, Katie, for making my mom's last day a good one and one that I will remember with calm and peaceful memories.
