Katiecan always be found volunteering to help the unit with staffing needs, adjusting her schedule, and helping new nurses. However, her desire to make the patient's stay here better is what is the most inspiring. With the focus of the patient's stay centered around their experience, I can say that Katie has a positive impact on every patient she encounters. Most recently, a patient was admitted for their last chemotherapy treatment. It was exciting for the patient and meant no more weeklong hospital stays. Typically, the family and nursing staff make a big deal about the last treatment however, this patient did not have family, at least none that ever visited over the past 14 months, and the fact that this was her last treatment was missed. Katie had not had many opportunities to care for the patient but being the overnight charge nurse, she heard about the last treatment. The following morning when her shift was complete, she left to buy the patient balloons and flowers and brought them back. She communicated the last treatment to the rest of the staff so that we could celebrate. We were able to make a big "Congratulations" sign and arrange for a special lunch. If it was not for Katie discovering that this was the last treatment, we would not have known until it was too late. While Katie did spend her own money and time to buy the patient a gift that would brighten up her last 5 days, the impact was much more than money can buy. The patient smiled non-stop for the rest of her stay. She left knowing that we truly cared for her both physically and emotionally. To me, that is the definition of excellence in nursing.
