December 2021 Honoree
Katie Hemenway, BSN, RN, CMSRN
Katie is an exceptional nurse and one that absolutely went above and beyond despite the chaos and stress of the “normal” day for an RN. I stayed with my grandpa for over 72 hours non-stop and slept next to him in the hospital. Of all the nurses that came in and helped my grandpa, she was absolutely the most knowledgeable, the most intentional, the most patient, and had the best bedside manner.
My grandpa is extremely hard of hearing and did not have his hearing devices; Katie took the time to write things to him on the board. She also ensured eye contact and body language cues to help assist in his understanding and interpretation. Katie took time to listen to my concerns about a safe discharge and how he isn’t safe to go back home with my grandma as they both are in need of assisted living. She advocated for my grandpa, sharing my concerns with the resident and the social worker. We were able to get my grandpa set up in rehab and discharged safely by her advocacy and attentiveness for my grandpa’s needs. She is the definition of a nurse.

Thank you, Katie, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
