I'm here with my brother. He is quite a handful with multiple morbidities, a failing brain, and at times a fiery spirit! He was brought to the ICU at about 1 am. He has been here for about 2 days and is ready to step down. Katie Herrick has been an absolute angel. Not only is she proficient in her job and full of knowledge, but she is also filled with compassion. You know when someone is passionate about their job when you see them care, I mean really care about the patient lying in the bed, not just looking at monitors and drip IV's and data but looking at him: this man who can't really speak his mind, who can't move freely on his own and to anticipate and understand the need, the basic human need to be clean, to be comfortable, and to be content in order for your body to be healing. Changing positions, changing bedding, adjusting pillows and wedges, cleaning his face and hands, these small gestures speak absolute volumes about Katie's serving heart. To top it off, today I walked in, and she has decorated his room with balloons and a banner, celebrating his birthday. She is the reason he has healed so quickly, because she loves so well.
