I am one of Katie's supervisors. A nurse from our PACU took the time to speak with me and our nursing director about what she witnessed with Katie's care during a rather difficult situation. The PACU nurse felt that Katie Spencer was amazing and a complete stand-out. A patient arrived on the L&D unit who thought she was in labor. Sadly, that was not the case, as the patient experienced an abruption and fetal loss requiring an urgent response to this critical situation. Katie stayed from the start of her shift at 11:00 am until 6:00 am the next morning to offer continuation of care and support for the patient and family. She helped ensure the patient's needs were met while advocating for the patient at the same time, as well. The PACU RN said that Katie's respectful and gentle approach made it seem like she had all the time in the world, though she was actually very busy. Katie involved the entire family to ensure everyone felt cared for. After working an extended shift, Katie returned to work the next day, in part because she told the patient she would be back. Katie provided amazing patient care and compassion and developed an incredible rapport with the patient and family during an extremely difficult situation.
