Katie spends time talking to her patients and getting to know their special interests and needs. Once she makes a connection with them, she finds ways to cheer them up and make them feel special.
Katie is the nurse you would want to care for you if you were sick. She is the most compassionate, empathetic, and caring nurse I have worked with in the past ten years. As one of Katie's supervisor, I am continually impressed by her style of nursing that is different from anyone else. I can always tell when Katie is the one caring for a patient because they always appear clean, neat, and are happy. She spends time talking to her patients and getting to know their special interests and needs. Once she makes a connection with them, she finds ways to cheer them up and make them feel special. For example, she found out that a patient needed hair care products since she hadn't washed her hair in weeks so the next day Katie got a care package of hair conditioner and candy for her dry mouth. There was another patient who was on palliative care whose daughter was graduating high school and she was going to miss it. Katie went to buy graduation decorations and decorated the room for her for when she came to visit. Katie is chair of the Sunshine Committee on CMICU where she organizes long-term patients to go outside for fresh air and sunshine. She coordinates RNs, RTs, and family to make the time special. During COVID, only one visitor can be with the patient, so these visits were extra special and appreciated by our patients. She even comes in on weekends to make this happen. One of the visits involved a young grandson who came to see his grandmother he hadn't seen in over a month. Katie got bubbles and coloring books for him to keep him occupied during the visit. Katie has also been involved in medical missions where she traveled to Africa for several weeks to provide medical care to the local people. Katie also forms strong bonds with her co-workers and is always planning birthdays, giving gifts, and doing small acts of kindness. Katie's co-workers and friends describe her as the kindest, most helpful, and dedicated nurse and person.
