I was 38 weeks and 5 days pregnant when I had a regular office visit that led to an induction 2 days later. My contractions started very quickly after the medication was given to start my labor. I was comfortable until the night shift came on. When I was told it was Katie, I was beyond happy, as I had had experiences with her before. Her being her bubbly self, walked in and was just as happy to see me. After asking if it was okay that she was my nurse, she said, "Let’s get this baby moving!" She got me into positions that helped my labor progress. She showed me different techniques for pain management as she knew I wanted to try a natural delivery.
As things progressed, I decided an epidural was what I needed. After I received my epidural, my blood pressure dropped, and so did my baby's heart rate. In this moment, a lot of things happened. Nurses in and out of the room, trying to reposition me to help get a stronger heart rate for the baby, putting oxygen on me, etc. While all this was happening, Katie stayed calm and collected, and explained everything to me that was going on- as I was 8ish hours into my labor, I was exhausted. I ended up having my baby during the day shift at 5 pm, and that night Katie was my nurse again. She told us that if there was anything she could do, let her know.
She ended up taking my son and letting my boyfriend and I sleep for 4 hours as the night before was very long and exhausting. She fed him colostrum that I was able to provide for her. I ended up having a lot of swelling, and Katie made sure I was up and moving as much as possible, wearing compression socks, and elevating my feet. You can tell that Katie's passion is caring for new moms and babies. I am truly blessed that she was my nurse throughout my hospital stay.
