During our shift, we learned of a tragic loss at RH 24 weeks. The Mother was septic and required an emergency transfer from the ICU. She was intubated and unaware that her baby had not survived. The father and young sibling were present, but the mother was unable to see or hold her baby due to her critical condition.

In this heartbreaking situation, Katie went above and beyond to ensure the family would have meaningful keepsakes. She created the most beautiful handprints and footprints for the parents. Wanting to do more, she brought in her own casting kit from home to make impressions of the baby’s hands and feet. When the attempt did not work, Katie immediately ordered another kit from Amazon and arranged for it to be delivered to a coworker so the family would not miss this opportunity.

Katie then returned to the unit and created the most precious hand and foot molds. Although this mother still has not been able to see her baby, she now has treasured mementos to hold and remember her child by. Katie’s compassion, resourcefulness, and dedication exemplify the true spirit of nursing! She provided comfort to this grieving family during their darkest time, creating lasting memories that will forever hold a place in their hearts.
