A trauma patient came in at the end of Katie's shift. Katie came back to the department without being asked to offer assistance. This led to her assistance for the next 3 hours. She performed many critical functions in order to facilitate a safe and stable transfer of the patient. After the event, Katie went to the waiting room to sit with the sister, contacted pastoral care, and contacted the police department to get the patient's elderly father transported to the hospital. Katie continued to sit with the patient's family until pastoral care and the patient's family no longer needed any further assistance, which led Katie to stay far past the end of the shift.

This circumstance is only a small part of why Katie should receive the DAISY award. She gives the term professional nurse its full meaning. She always accepts full care of the patient, attending to not only their physiologic needs but their psychological stability.
