Katie received notification from our Nurse Navigators that one of their patients was in the ER. She read the ER note to find that the patient was admitted for nausea, diarrhea, and extreme weakness. Even though this patient had not received treatment with us in several months, she recognized that the symptoms could be a delayed side effect from immunotherapy. She notified the doctor and he ordered the appropriate labs. Katie’s suspicion was confirmed that this patient had adrenal insufficiency, a rare and potentially life-threatening side effect of immunotherapy. Her knowledge and perseverance made a huge impact on this patient!
