Katie is the sister on J96, working with acute oncology patients. There is no doubt that working as a nurse in the NHS is challenging. Working within oncology, however, has its own unique challenges. One occasion which stands out for me whilst working with Katie is when she and her team went beyond their duties to get a patient's children to the hospital. Unfortunately, there had been a divorce and relations between the parents were not good. However, the mother was approaching the end of her life and wanted the opportunity to see the children. Difficult conversations were had with the father and grandparents and the children were taken out of school, following persuasion from Katie. Katie then took on the difficult task of preparing the young teenage children and grandmother before they went in to see their Mum. Following the visit, the eldest thanked Katie for giving her the opportunity to see her Mum again. Mum passed away the next day. Without Katie's perseverance, those children would never have had the opportunity to see their Mum before she passed. This case affected us all, and I know it was heart-wrenching for Katie to be so involved with. Nurses are our rocks, they are the cornerstone of patient care, not just for clinical care, but emotional support as well. I'm proud to work alongside Katie.
