There are countless examples that demonstrate the meaningful difference in care Katie provides to her patients. During Katie's time in Progressive ICU, a patient's status was declining, and the decision was made that he would accept the end of his life in the hospital. He told Katie that he wished he could feel the sun again. Katie made sure the patient got his final wish. She pushed the patient's bed all the way out to the Healing Garden and sat with him while he soaked up as much sunlight as he could. Even after the patient passed, his family reached out to praise Katie for giving the patient such a special moment. Katie also rescued her immobile patient from a fire. A fire had sparked at the electrical outlet behind the patient's bed. Without a moment of hesitation, Katie rushed into action and pulled the patient's bed safely into the hallway, away from the blaze. Most recently, she went above and beyond to help her patient celebrate a large milestone in her healing journey. The patient had been admitted for extensive post-op complications. Due to her complications, the patient was not able to eat or drink anything for almost 60 days. Katie cared for this patient often and followed along with her care. When the day finally arrived for the doctors to feel the patient was safe to advance to a clear liquid diet, Katie was as excited as the patient. She went to the gift shop and purchased a teddy bear, balloons, and a blue Gatorade. Knowing what a wonderful moment that first sip of Gatorade would be, Katie rallied the staff to gather around and celebrate this major step in the patient's healing.
