Katie went above and beyond and met this patient where he was at to ensure quality care in a timely manner.
Katie Wynn joined Gill Heart and Vascular Institute to support our Cardiology Outreach Clinic in Mount Vernon, Kentucky. Katie is enthusiastic for the opportunity to work with this clinic through UK HealthCare. She resides in Mount Vernon and is deeply connected to the community, its patients, and their advanced Cardiology service needs. She exemplifies our values and commitment to serving the Commonwealth of Kentucky through her passion for nursing and understanding of individual social determinants of health. One example of Katie’s extraordinary care includes her recent encounter with a patient who needed an ICD implant due to heart failure.

This patient struggled with many barriers. He was homeless, did not have a phone, and relied on others for transportation. Katie recognized it would be difficult for him to make all the necessary arrangements to have his potentially lifesaving procedure. Knowing the patient’s needs and her community, Katie arranged to meet the patient at his job after his shift. She secured a private space and provided patient education about the procedure and aftercare. She ensured his needs were met and all of his questions were answered.

During the education, Katie identified that he could not obtain Chlorhexidine Gluconate cloths per the pre-procedure protocol for the device implant. She contacted the cath lab team to ask for approved substitutions and was given a dial soap protocol. She resourced to get the soap and provided instructions on how to prep. She educated the patient again on the importance of this step in his care prior to his procedure to avoid infection. With Katie’s help, the patient successfully received his ICD. Without Katie, this patient would have been at risk due to the barriers in his care.

Katie went above and beyond and met this patient where he was at to ensure quality care in a timely manner. Katie is a shining example of what making a meaningful difference in a patient’s life looks like. Katie is strongly committed to meeting the needs of her community. She recently started a donation system for non-perishable food items that are available to those in need. We celebrate Katie’s efforts to understand all patient’s need, identify barriers to care, and promotion of community relationships on behalf of UK Healthcare.
