I cannot express my gratitude for Memorial Hospital and the ICU unit during the most horrible time of my life. The whole unit along with the doctors was more than I ever expected, and I would like to thank them and Memorial Hospital. I would like to tell you about my mom's nurse, Katlyn Atchley. I met Katlyn when my mother was there for a brain bleed, and she was unconscious and on a ventilator. We were told she would not make it. She explained what she could, and we were all in shock. I asked many questions, and she answered them and gently turned my mom, taking ever so much care to be gentle and kind. At one point, I started walking around and saw her computer, I walked over, looking at the screen not knowing what I was reading, but she kindly told me I was not allowed to read their notes. Katlyn asked if she could get me anything so kind and caring, she brought in extra chairs for the family, always at our side to help. She gave my family generous time to say goodbye and she was patient and held our hands. When it was decided to take my mom off the vent, she printed out my mom’s heartbeat, stayed close, and even got a doctor as my stepfather was falling apart. Katlyn was there with my sister when my mom passed, consoling all of us and making sure someone would be with my stepfather afterward. She knew how to address our concerns, how to take care of my mom, clean her, give her meds, and how to let us know mom was gone in the most beautiful way, she was amazing! We were overcome with grief and on the verge of a breakdown and had it not been for Katlyn and the doctor, I would have not been able to manage what was a very difficult situation.
