Katrina Bryant assumed care of a young cirrhosis patient as well as preceptor of a new graduate nurse. What seemed like a typical assignment became a fight for survival for the young patient and his nurse. Shortly after assuming care, the patient deteriorated to shock liver, multi-system organ failure secondary to hemorrhagic shock from bleeding varices. Katrina provided expert assistance to the critical care and GI team during multiple prolonged bedside procedures and not leaving his side, not even to use the bathroom, for over 10 hours and administered 29 blood products giving this patient his only chance for survival by buying precious time to get him transferred to a higher level of care.
Katrina's expert clinical skills, collaboration with the critical care and GI team, her mentorship to the new grad nurse assigned to her, gave her young patient the best possible opportunity for survival and exemplify the qualities required of a DAISY Award recipient and I certainly couldn't be more excited to have her as part of our critical care team.
