She was unbelievably kind and very helpful with the end-of-life care for my grandfather. We will forever be thankful for being able to work with Katrina.

Katrina has the biggest caring heart when it comes to her patients. She checks in with them frequently throughout the day. Not only is Katrina caring for her patients, but she also is caring for her coworkers. She is always there to help out any of the other staff when needed.

If a staff member is having a hard moment, she is there to help them through the moment. Katrina always goes above and beyond for the med/surg unit.

I would like to formally recognize Katrina for the extraordinary care, compassion, and professionalism she demonstrated while caring for my uncle in the Palliative Care Unit at Porter Hospital.

During one of the most difficult times in our lives, Katrina provided not only exceptional medical care but also genuine human compassion. She treated my uncle with dignity, respect, and kindness in his final days, ensuring he was as comfortable as possible every step of the way.

What meant the most to our family was the way Katrina went beyond her clinical responsibilities. When family members were not able to be there, she sat with my uncle and gave him the time and space to share his stories. She listened, engaged, and made sure he never felt alone. That level of presence and empathy brought him comfort in his final moments and gave our family peace knowing he was cared for so deeply.

In addition, Katrina demonstrated an exceptional commitment to the nursing profession. My uncle had a rare medical condition, and she used her experience caring for him as an opportunity to educate other nurses. By helping her peers better understand and recognize unexpected medical conditions, she ensured that the impact of her care would extend far beyond just one patient.

Katrina embodies everything the DAISY Award stands for—clinical excellence, compassion, and a profound dedication to both patients and the nursing community. She made a lasting difference in my uncle’s life and in the lives of our entire family during an incredibly dark time.

It is important to us that Katrina and her leadership know just how meaningful her care was. She made a difference, and she will always be remembered by our family with deep gratitude and respect.

Katrina went way above just nursing when my stepfather was at Porter. He entered and declined quickly due to breathing and heart failure. We count our blessings that Katrina was his caregiver.

She soothed his anxiety, made him comfortable, and helped him, along with us, get through this very sad time. I have never witnessed such kindness and compassion in a hospital before, and I think she deserves this award and so much gratitude.

Thank you!

Last week, my family spent the last few days of my uncle’s life at Porter. Katrina showed compassion and made sure that every single one of us knew what was happening and made sure we were taken care of.

She learned the names of our family members and gave hugs when needed. She also made sure to speak to my uncle the entire time, although he was not responding, always giving that humanizing care and ensuring that he knew what was happening to him.

Our whole family was impressed with the level of care he received & felt comfortable knowing he was in her care.

Katrina was recently intimately involved in the care of a dying patient with a large family arriving from disparate physical and emotional places and who was suffering from symptoms that were hard to witness and, at times, hard to control.

Katrina advocated loudly and often on the patient's behalf, ensuring that orders were in place in case of emergent symptoms and providing reassuring presence at the bedside, soothing and educating the patient's family on expectations.

The patient's family praised Katrina in the patient's obituary in the Addison Independent: "The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff at Middlebury Porter Hospital Palliative Care Unit, and in particular to his special nurse, Katrina, whose compassion and care for his dignity brought great comfort in his final days."

In palliative care, a mention in a patient's obituary is one of the highest honors - Katrina is a palliative care star here in our Addison County community.

Thank you, Katrina, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
