In November of 2021, I was on the family birthplace unit to have my first child. As a first-time mom, I was scared of the unknowns and didn’t know what to expect. I had labored for 26 hours, was tired, was hungry, and just wanted to be able to hold my baby boy. My night shift nurse, Katie, was extraordinary. She was constantly checking on me, asking how I was doing, repositioning me, validating my feelings, and holding my hand through the process. She made my first delivery memorable. When I came back for my second delivery, I asked for Katie by name. When in my second delivery I had her care for my postpartum recovery, it was that much more memorable. She kept in sight our entire family as she kept an eye on my husband when he wasn’t feeling well after delivery.
