Katy took care of an awake, alert, and oriented COVID-19 positive patient who had been in the hospital for weeks and had bounced back to the ICU. He looked like a patient that would be admitted with failure to thrive. He was depressed, lonely, and refusing to eat, drink, or take medications. Katy went above and beyond. She called his wife and inquired if he would be receptive to having the chaplain come visit and offer support. His wife gave permission to arrange an appointment.
During team rounds, Katy advocated and brought up his mental wellbeing which often gets overlooked. Katy called to ask his wife what some of his favorite foods were. Katy then went and bought him a milkshake at McDonald's. After not eating for days he finally drank some of the milkshake she had surprised him with. Katy shows compassion and empathy for all her patients. I know this patient and his wife are grateful for Katy's care. I'm honored to work beside an outstanding nurse like Katy. She is a true DAISY Nurse!
