I would like to recognize Kawanna Stephenson for going above and beyond for a Joint Camp patient. Kawanna, realizing that the patient was overwhelmed with all she had to do before the day of surgery, made sure the patient who was scheduled for the following week for a joint replacement was prepared and nothing fell through the cracks with the process.
On the day of Joint Camp, all patients have labs drawn and an EKG prior to class. The patient told Kawanna that she had just had labs drawn at the doctor's office a couple of days before and was scheduled to go to her cardiologist office on Friday and he would do an EKG. She wanted to know if we could use those labs and she would tell her doctor's office to fax her EKG over. Kawanna called the Orthopedic Clinic, spoke with the nurse about the labs and was told yes, the labs drawn earlier would be fine, she would just need to give a urine sample. Kawanna could have stopped right there, but she wanted to make sure nothing was getting missed. She called the doctor's office to verify what labs had been drawn and asked them to fax the results to Pre Admission Testing (PAT). Kawanna discovered there were needed pre-op labs that were not drawn in her doctor's office. She verified they faxed the labs they had drawn, and then called the cardiologist office and spoke to his nurse to make a note to fax the EKG to Pre Admission Testing and gave them the fax number instead of leaving it up to the patient. At this point, she had made sure to get all the needed labs, urine, made sure the EKG would get faxed and that Pre Admission Testing also had all this information including the name and number of the nurse at the cardiologist's office. Then the patient mentioned that the joint replacement doctor told her she would have to be cleared by her pulmonary physician. Kawanna then called his office, verified she was cleared and had that faxed to Pre Admission Testing. She did everything possible to prevent delays in this patient's surgery and everything she could to prove we provide excellent care.
